Coconut Gardens, Quiet Canals, and a Way of Life That Still Breathes
We had the chance to take our friends on a very special journey — one that started in a 100-year-old lychee orchard at Poomjai Garden, and led us deep into the heart of Bang Phra Thun, a small canal-side community that still lives the quiet life of Bangkok’s old orchard culture.

☀️ From Morning Traffic to Morning TranquilityTranquility
While the city’s weekday traffic was in full swing, we found ourselves stepping into a different world — starting from Poomjai Garden, a heritage orchard nestled in Thonburi. Once filled with homes that lined the canals, this area was part of a time when Bangkok was known not for its buildings, but for its gardens.
Before setting off, we had coffee under the trees at Natura Café, a charming bamboo café in the middle of the orchard. It was the perfect way to refresh and begin our journey.
🚤 Cruising Into the Heart of the Village
When it was time to leave, Uncle Lim, a well-known local boatman of the village, welcomed us aboard his small wooden boat — the same kind locals still use every day. The boat was simple, with a small engine humming softly as we glided along Khlong Bang Khun Thian, past once-bustling sites like Wat Sai Floating Market, and turned into the narrower waterway of Khlong Bang Phra Thun — a small, winding canal that feels like a lifeline into a living memory.

🥥 Welcome to Auntie Jam’s Coconut Garden
After just 20 minutes on the water, we arrived at Auntie Jam’s coconut garden — a place where time seems to move slower. With a warm smile, Pi Jam picked a fresh coconut right off the tree and handed it to us. It was sweet, cool, and absolutely perfect.
Her garden doesn’t just supply coconuts to Poomjai Garden — it also grows fresh lotus stems (sai bua), which she hand-harvests every morning from the canal for cooking. Everything here is done with care, by hand, and from the heart. This is what real orchard life looks like — still alive in the heart of Bangkok.
🌱 Thonburi, Bangkok Like You’ve Never Seen Before
This journey into Bang Phra Thun wasn’t just a visit — it was a way of reconnecting with a culture that once defined this city.
✔️ We traveled by wooden boat, just like the locals do
✔️ We learned how lotus stems are harvested
✔️ We walked through orchard pathways and watched coconuts being picked
✔️ If you're lucky, you might even see how they make roasted coconuts
✔️ And of course, we tasted fresh coconut water straight from the tree
